Rotifers are an essential live food for marine fry, coral larvae, and filter feeders. They're rich in protein, small enough for tiny mouths, and easy to digest. Culturing them at home is possible, but it's usually more effort than most hobbyists expect.
Here's how the process actually works, and why a lot of reefers just buy them in instead.
What you'll need
- A clean container, usually 5 to 20 L
- Marine saltwater at 1.018 to 1.020 salinity
- Rotifer starter culture
- Live phytoplankton (not optional)
- Fine mesh sieve (53 microns or smaller)
- Gentle aeration
- Daily attention: feeding, harvesting, and cleaning
Setup process
Prepare the water. Mix saltwater to 1.020 and let it aerate before doing anything else. Rotifers are sensitive to sudden salinity shifts.
Add the culture. Introduce your rotifers once the water is stable. Don't overstock early or they'll crash quickly without enough food.
Feed live phytoplankton daily. Rotifers need constant food. If the water isn't slightly green, they're starving. Live phyto works best, and it has to be dosed daily.
Harvest gently. Use a fine sieve to collect the rotifers, then rinse with clean saltwater. Always leave enough behind to maintain the population.
Clean, top off, repeat. Rotifers foul water fast. Regular water changes and daily cleaning are non-negotiable. Cultures can die overnight if neglected.
Common issues
- Crashes from overfeeding, underfeeding, or poor water quality
- Ammonia spikes within 24 to 48 hours
- Starvation if live phyto isn't fresh or abundant enough
- Contamination from hands, buckets, or shared tools
- Uneven density across the culture, leading to poor harvest yield
Is it actually worth it?
Unless you're raising fry daily or culturing at scale, probably not. The time and gear investment is real, and a single missed day can wipe out weeks of work.
That's why a lot of hobbyists order live rotifers from trusted suppliers instead. Our cultures are dense, clean, and ready to feed straight from the bottle. No crashing, no guessing, no wasted phyto.
