What is Phytoplankton?
Phytoplankton are microscopic, single-celled algae that drift in water and serve as a base of the marine food chain. They convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and nutrients into energy through photosynthesis, and produces over half the world’s oxygen (amazing right!)
Why is Phytoplankton Important?
Foundation of marine life: Almost everything in the ocean either eats phytoplankton or eats something that does.
Natural water conditioner: They absorb carbon dioxide and help stabilise pH in marine environments.
Essential for filter feeders: Corals, sponges, clams, and copepods rely on phytoplankton as a primary food source.
Boosts biodiversity: A consistent supply supports a healthier, more active reef.
How to Dose Phytoplankton
5ml-10ml per 100L daily is the general rule of thumb, often people will dose higher amounts just be careful of nutrient spikes.
How to Culture Phytoplankton
We have a fairly elaborate guide in our blog: How to Culture Phytoplankton
